Short answer: carry every food item to the pantry so it counts toward your supplies, open the survival guide each day to see how many days your food and water will last, and drop the ration setting from full to reduced or emergency as soon as the number looks short. Keep a knife, fork or can opener: some food cannot be eaten without one.

Where is the food?

In your own apartment: the kitchen cabinets and the fridge hold crackers, eggs, fridge leftovers, rice, canned tomatoes, peas and other cans. Gathering it is a day 0 objective (beginner guide). After that, food comes from:

  • Neighbors who leave. On day 1 Ruth leaves a box on her dining table for you.
  • Empty apartments. Some are bare, others hold crackers, rice and cans. Locked ones open with keys found inside the building or through the vents.
  • The community kitchen on floor 19, which players reached through the lift shaft (floors).

The pantry shelf only accepts food: if an item will not go on it, it is not counted as food.

How do rations work?

The survival guide shows your stock in days, for example “clean water 18 L: full rations for nine days”. You set the daily ration to one of three levels:

Setting When to use it
Full Only while food and water both show plenty of days
Reduced As soon as either one drops toward a week
Emergency When you are short and still far from a way to get more

One player switched to emergency on day 2 with 16.5 food portions and 68 L of water, to be safe from the start. The log in the same guide shows how much was eaten each night, which is the quickest way to see whether your setting matches your stock. Food is measured in portions: a bag of rice counted as six.

How do you eat, and why can't you open some food?

Hold the food and use the eat action; one portion is eaten at a time. Canned and packaged food needs a tool: players were blocked until they found a knife or fork, and a can opener turned up in drawers in several apartments. The knife doubles as a weapon, so it is worth carrying.

Eat before you sleep: the game reminds you to eat a portion as part of locking up for the night, and one co-op player who skipped food and water started losing health.

Does food go bad?

Yes. Players have found food marked “gone off, not safe to eat”, and one guide describes food and drinks spoiling over time, so hoarding a pile of cans and waiting does not work. Eat the perishable food (leftovers, eggs) first and keep cans and rice for later.

Should you trade food?

Neighbors ask for it. Mara, who taps on the pipes, offers a radio for two food portions, and players who agreed got the radio and its broadcast (backpacks, lights and radio). Two portions are cheap early on; a week later they may not be.

Food players have found

Food Notes from the recordings
Crackers Common in kitchens and other apartments; one co-op group found theirs marked “gone off, not safe to eat”
Eggs, fridge leftovers In your own fridge on day 0; perishable, so eat them first
Rice One bag counted as six portions
Canned tomatoes, peas, corn, other cans Need a knife, fork or can opener
Fish Seen in the starting kitchen in one run
Mixed groceries One player could not cook raw groceries while the power was still on

Portions are what the survival guide counts, not items: a bag of rice is worth more than a single can.

How should a group share food?

In co-op everyone eats from the same pantry. One player who had just let Daniel in planned to cut rations “right away” to one portion each, which is a reasonable start: agree on a ration level as a group and change it together. A neighbor living with you does not show up in the recordings as eating from your pantry.
