  4. The cutTaps dry, lifts stop, nights black
  5. Alarm (one report)If the hallway breaker was left alone

Short answer: in the first days the building cuts the water and the power: the taps stop, the lifts stop and the floors go pitch black at night. You cannot stop the cut. One guide reports a trap on day 4: if you leave the hallway electrical breaker alone, an emergency alarm goes off and pulls every zombie on the floor to your door, so it flips the breaker as soon as you leave the apartment.

When does the power go?

The game warns you first. On day 2 a building notice says water and power supplies will be cut off. The cut itself came at different points in different runs: one player lost power while looting another apartment, a co-op group saw it on day 3, and in another run the lights went out with the message that the elevators had stopped.

What changes after the cut:

Before After
Taps run Taps stop; only stored and treated water is left (water)
Lifts run (neighbors leave “while the lift still runs”) Lifts stop; the shafts become routes (lift shafts)
Lit corridors Pitch black at night; daylight only through windows
- Fridge no longer powered

Opening the blinds during the day lets light in after the cut.

What is the day 4 alarm?

One guide (BlaxieBACON, recorded 6 November) describes it: if you leave the hallway electrical breaker alone, a loud emergency alarm goes off on the fourth day and draws every zombie on the floor to your front door, where the narrow entry leaves no room to swing. The advice is to flip the breaker right after you first leave your apartment.

Other recordings back up the part that alarms draw zombies (a player who set one off watched the hallway fill), but we have not seen a second recording of the day 4 alarm itself, so treat the timing as one player’s report. Flipping the breaker early costs nothing.

How do you see in the dark?

  • Flashlight: its battery drains (one player was at 68% after a long session). Carry batteries.
  • Lantern from a cupboard, headlamp (one in the apartment next door, another on floor 27) and candles.
  • Peephole plus flashlight: you can shine it through the peephole to check the hallway.

More on each in backpacks, lights and radio.

Equipment rule from the survival book

“Turn equipment off when finished.” Batteries are the one thing that keeps your light working after the cut, so switch the flashlight off in daylight.

Before-the-cut checklist

Everything here gets harder or impossible once the power goes:

  1. Fill the tub, every bucket and every bottle; store them on the rack (water).
  2. Use the lift while it runs only if you must; neighbors leave by it on day 1.
  3. Find the flashlight and any batteries in your flat.
  4. Flip the hallway breaker (one guide’s day 4 tip).
  5. Locate the toolbox and the triangular key, so you can use the shafts after the lifts stop.

Is the power ever restored?

Not in any recording up to 8 November. Water comes back through the floor 27 valve, which pumps to the roof tank; nothing suggests the same for electricity, so plan for dark nights for the rest of the run.
